Doug, this looks good. One question though. Is he supposed to be standing on part of the road and part of the dirt? If that's the case, it's a little confusing because the distinction is not clear. The texture and value are a good start, but I think there could be something else. Maybe the hue. Right now the temperatures are similar. You could try adding some blues to the road. Also, maybe you could put a couple patches of grass in the foreground near his feet. The textures close up should be a little more clearly defined. It wouldn't take much, and I think it would help a lot with the spacial perspective. Right now there is not enough to tell you that it's a road until you look at it for a while, and also the fact that he is a hitchhiker. Overall I like the idea. Just watch your "push and pulls" of contrast.
