March Madness for the Masters

Hey, y'all! Jenna will be hibernating for a while, and she asked if I would take over Open Sketch Book Society in the meantime. Of course, I said I would. So, to keep up with the original pupose of this blog -which is to be used as a place for encouragement, critique, accountability, and for challenging each other to push further in the endeavors we are already undertaking- I am proposing a new challenge for the upcoming month of March to modivated those of us (myself included) who are in need of an idea, who have not been making art lately, or who have just been considerably inconsistent about posting their progress.

If you don't want to do the challenge, that is totally okay. My hope is that this blog will be revived in someway, and if that means posting the few warm up sketches you have throughout the week, that's fine. The point is that we stay in touch with each other. I have not been posting because I have not been drawing. Lame! Let's get drawing, kids!

The challenge for March is this:

Choose one of the Old Masters, do some research on him or her, and at the end of the month have a piece of contribution to that artist. This is very open-ended. It can be a remake of an artist's work, something you do based on their style or what you learn about them, or even a series using a technique they used. The options are unlimited. The only definitive guideline is that you research the artist and explain to the rest of us what you learned and why you did the piece you did.

It's still early so there is plenty of time. Ready. Set. Go!

Girl Band

I started with trying to make a banner for my blog, but instead I ended up with a poster for a girl band. Anyone want to join my band?

Anonymous Love Letters Zine

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Here is the zine from last year, and the zine from this year available for download! Just use the following links!

When you go to print out your zines, I recommend that you set up printing it so the pages are double sided. That way you use 10 sheets of paper rather than 20, and it's easier to staple.

Also, the downloads will only be available this week! So get your copy as soon as you can!

Thank you everyone for Submitting and Enjoy!

fiction

Cover for my upcoming graphic novel, which I will probably never make. But if I did, the cover would look something like this.

Done this afternoon for grad school portfolio. Want to have some character-based artwork in it.

Anonymous Love Letters Zine 2010

Dear Participate,

Welcome to Anonymous Love Letters 2010. In 2009 we published our first issue; which will be available for your reading pleasure once we figure out how to make it available. Everything will be all set up for February 14 though.

A year later we are calling for entries! Please submit all entries via email to
joinsketchsociety at yahoo dot com. With the subject line of: Anonymous Love Letters 2010.
If "Anonymous Love Letters 2010" is not in the subject, your email will not be read.

You may scan your hand written letter of: 8 1/2 x 11 inches(max size) at 300 dpi, and jpeg format.
Or
Send your anonymous love letter via email.
Or
Send your letter in a word document with a font of your choice.

It's free to submit.
You can submit as many letters as you like.
Not all letters will make it into the zine.

All letters are due: February 13 at 9:00pm EST.
The zine will then available for download on February 14th somewhere that will be decided in the next day or so.

This is so you may submit and download a copy to print out and give to that special someone on that special day, or any day if your one of those cynical types that thinks Valentine's Day is crock.

Everything is completely anonymous unless you want to:
sign your name on your letter
sign your initials on your letter
use code names that only you and someone else will understand.

If you want to make an art piece as your letter go for it! Exploring all options is encouraged as long as you meet the above requirements of: 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 300 dpi, jpeg format.

Love,
JZ

Winner!

Okay I finally got to check the email and total the vote! Alyssa's banner won. Maybe in a couple of months we'll do another one of these and keep switching people out. It was a close race Mike!

Paris in Plantsville

Just a reminder, the Paris in Plantsville show opening is this saturday, and anyone who lives near the Southington area should check it out. The work will be up for a month or so, and the majority will be from UofH graduates, including two new oil paintings from myself.

Vote!

From February 1 to February 6th there will be an open vote (that means everyone and anyone) for which banner they would like to see at the top of blog. Everyone is entitled to one vote only. I encourage people to vote for which banner they think really represents Open Sketch Book Society and not just vote for themselves.
Please send your vote in the subject line of an email to: joinsketchsociety@yahoo.com
